U.S. Army, Cuba, 1898

After the declaration of war against Spain, effective
21 April 1898, infantry regular Hoppe soon found
himself in the tseaming jungles of C uba, ready to attack
the heavily fortified blockhouse atop San Juan Hill
overlooking Santiago. “The “Rough Riders” took
Kettle Hill, on 1 HJuly. Now it was the infantry’s turn.
After the order to fix bayonets, Hoppe surveyed
the hill in front, ready to move out in
this “splendid little war.”
