The Americans #923
Sergeant John M. Cook
Marine Corps, 1836

"Mike," as he was called by his friends, stood at
Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C., and smiled as
he watched his squad drill, resplendent in their
green coats as authorized by President Andrew Jackson.
Their Hall rifles, neatly shined, glistened in the
afternoon sun. Really a historian at heart, Mike was
aware he literally was standing on history, the
Barracks being spared from the City's burning in 1814.
And now he was a part of the Corps' historical growth.
Someday he knew his efforts in contributing to his
Country's history would be recognized.
